Slackware x86_64
(posted by Fred Emmott at 2005-01-26 13:05:20)

After 3 weeks or so of work, finally got Slamd64 (my unofficial port of slackware for the x86_64 architecture) into a just-about-working order. The only issues I'm aware of are minor problems with the install (tagfiles), and 32-bit compatability for GTK+ applications (pango to be specific). 32 bit compatablity works for most other things I've tried, for example cedega. I've uploaded my second alpha (also known as Coaster17) to ftp.scarlet.be, in the form of isos only, because I currently don't have a reliable enough connection to upload the individual packages and source.

Some people will be disappointed to know that I haven't included GNOME. This is simply because it's incredibly time consuming to build and package - Pat's thinking of removing it for slackware-11, so I don't really see it as worthwhile including it here.

Other than that, the main differences are that it's based on GCC 3.4 and Linux 2.6, instead of 3.2/2.4, due to improved x86_64 compatability.

Reference for the potential GNOME drop in Slackware 11?

I\'m just wondering if you\'ve got a reference for the possible GNOME removal from slackware-11; it sounds plausible, but it could also be construed as trolling GNOME\'s set of pet idiots (in much the same way that suggesting that slack would drop KDE because it\'s huge would cause KDE\'s set of pet idiots to show up screaming).

reference for gnome drop

http://ximpul.ath.cx/log.txt I was on freenode\'s ##slackware at the time, so I know the log is accurate: Jan 14 13:37:10 <unixfool> volkerdi: heard rumors about gnome getting removed from the slackware distribution...true? [snip] Jan 14 13:37:29 <volkerdi> unixfool: Nothing against GNOME, but true.

Thanks

I bitch enough at people who make unsubstantied (and false) claims about KDE that I feel that I have to be fair when I see an unsubstantiated claim about GNOME.

Now there is nothing holding me back

Now there is nothing holding me back from investing into a AMD64 bit system. :-) Will every 64 bit system work, or are there things that I should watch out for. Important for me is that extra things like, technologies to run silent and at lower power also work. Go Slack Go

As far as I know, every system will work, as long as you don\'t have a SATA optical drive. Silent and lower power, you may need to rebuild kernel.

SATA optical drive, that is like a cd-rom or dvd that is connected to SATA in stead of IDE? A SATA150 hard disk is ok? Thanks already!

SATA hard drives work fine. Yes, by optical i mean cd-rom or dvd. I\'ve got a SATA hard disk :)

Any help needed?

Do you want some help to compile new packages? What slack version do you compile? Do you use the source package from Slackware out of the box or is there any change to be applied systematically? Best regards,

Keep up good work!

I will also invest into a new AMD64 system this spring, and i am more than happy that there is a slackware port (even if it\'s unofficial). Thank you. Keep up good work. Have anybody heard about the official x86-64 version of Slack? 11.0 will support this arch?
